Celebrating Construction Workers This Labor Day 2026

Labor Day is a time to recognize the people whose work keeps our economy moving. Few industries make that contribution more visible than construction.

From roads, homes, and manufacturing plants to warehouses, data centers, and critical infrastructure, construction workers help build the places and systems we depend on every day.

This Labor Day, Condustrial is proud to recognize the skilled men and women who keep America building.

Skilled Workers Are Still in High Demand

Construction conditions have shifted in 2026, but demand for qualified workers remains strong.

Associated Builders and Contractors estimates the industry needs to attract approximately 349,000 additional workers in 2026 to meet demand.

A September 2026 survey from the Associated General Contractors of America and NCCER also found that 87% of contractors had openings for hourly craft workers. Among those trying to hire, 88% said those positions were as difficult or more difficult to fill than a year ago.

For skilled workers, that creates opportunity.

Electricians, welders, equipment operators, carpenters, pipefitters, millwrights, mechanics, CNC operators, foremen, and other skilled professionals continue to be essential to keeping projects moving.

Construction Can Be a Career

For many workers, construction is more than a job. It can provide a path to a long-term career.

Workers can enter the industry, develop a trade, earn certifications, and advance into lead, supervisory, and management positions.

Those skills also have value. Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that production and nonsupervisory construction workers averaged $39.24 per hour in July 2026, although wages vary significantly by trade, experience, location, and employer.

For people who enjoy hands-on work and want an alternative to a traditional four-year college path, the skilled trades continue to offer strong possibilities.

The Industry Is Changing

Today’s construction industry also requires increasingly technical skills.

Advanced equipment, automation, digital tools, prefabrication, and more complex electrical and mechanical systems are changing the way projects are built.

Data-center construction is one example. The 2026 AGC/NCCER survey found that 58% of contractors working on data centers said those projects were increasing competition for skilled workers.

That means employers increasingly need people who combine hands-on ability with technical knowledge, safety awareness, problem-solving skills, and a willingness to keep learning.

Investing in People

America continues to invest heavily in construction. U.S. construction spending was running at an annual rate of approximately $2.16 trillion in July 2026.

But buildings and infrastructure do not get built without people.

Contractors recognize that challenge. More than eight out of 10 firms in the AGC/NCCER survey reported increasing base pay for craft and salaried workers, while many are also increasing investments in training and professional development.

Skilled workers are developed through experience, mentoring, apprenticeships, certifications, and time on the job.
