Are you dreading going to work and feeling lazy while at work? Has work-related stress, personal stress, Covid stress impacted your desire to clock in? These feelings are common in that everyone suffers from low motivation from time to time and more than likely you enjoy your job but you just feel low. That’s why we’ve come up with 5 tricks to get you feeling motivated by putting the excitement back into your work and putting you back on track to your next promotion.
Start With Small Goals: Oftentimes you have a large list to tackle and things can get overwhelming very quickly which can make you want to push the task of and do it later. Or maybe a project you had will be time-consuming or puzzling. Rather than throwing the whole task list together and thinking about how much you can get done of the overall large goal, try breaking it down into smaller “bite-sized” amounts of work. This allows you to feel rewarded more than once along the journey while still being able to get work done. This will also leave you feeling less stressed and overwhelmed at the end of the day. Just remember to get it done and to prioritize what needs to be completed first.
Focus On Relieving Stress: During your time off from work try focusing on doing tasks that make you feel relaxed. Try that new yoga studio you’ve been eyeing or read a good book. Whatever you like to do to feel less stressed, put some attention on that. This will help you leave work at work and think about other things when you have your own time. And while you’re at it, make this a habit to get used to. In the end, you’ll feel much less stressed both in and out of work.
Set A Schedule: Jumping off of setting aside time for yourself is making a schedule. Try to plan out your day ahead of time and stick to it to make your workflow more efficient. Do you typically finish your day after you’ve clocked out? Try setting a hard stop time while sticking to this schedule as a way to leave work where it belongs and not bring it home with you. You need some time to unplug from work, so let yourself have the time. The tasks will be there tomorrow.
Reward Yourself: Remember those small goals we talked about earlier? Try rewarding yourself for completing those. Maybe it’s a stop at your favorite ice cream shop or a new set of headphones, do something that makes you feel happy, and reward yourself even for the small stuff. This will push you to work harder knowing you’ll be getting something out of it in the end.
Allow Yourself to Focus: It can be easy to get distracted from the tasks at hand, especially if you’re a procrastinator, so utilize the tips above and allow yourself to get in the zone. Sometimes you just need to know yourself and know what will help you be the most productive, so listen to your mind and let the workflow flow. Even if you have a hard time pushing yourself to get in the zone, try the 10-minute rule of focusing on a task for just 10 minutes and then taking a break.
